Chapter 8

Robert.

I never dreamed it would be so hard to say good-bye to my mother. At least I got to say good-bye. It was the worst moment of my life. My father was silent. I couldn’t console him. They’d spent so many years together and now he had to finish his life without her. I can’t bear knowing he’ll be alone. I don’t want to be alone either. I thought I’d met someone. Maybe. Well, that was a joke. The joke was on me. It’s not enough to get my heart ripped out and thrown on the ground. Then one of my employees played some cruel prank on me. How twisted does someone have to be? I told her I was losing my mother. She knew. And still she played it off like she was some damn stranger.

When she told me she was the one that I’d been talking to, it felt like somebody took a rusty jagged edge and sliced me open. I had an ember of hope. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t ready to jump into some intense relationship. I need to grieve the loss of my mother, but it would have been nice to have someone to talk to, a friend, and maybe, gradually a lover. Only no, I’m a laughing stock, an office prank. I wonder how many others know about this?

I’ll be honest, I’m glad she didn’t show up at work today. I barely did. They said I could take time off because of my mother’s passing, but I’d rather stay distracted. Sitting at home, my brain locks in on the pain and won’t let go. It holds onto me like some damn badger with a nasty grip.

I’m a foolish old man, thinking I could meet somebody on a computer. I’m embarrassed she knows I was on that site. I should have never posted. This new-fangled technology, that’s not how you meet people. It’s how you make a fool of yourself.
